The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in federal court, targets the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the most significant counterpunch by Democrats in the ongoing redistricting war that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will influence the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its agenda or face resistance, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
